Call a Mebane dentist today for an appointment if you need a denture to replace missing teeth. A partial is a prosthesis that replaces some of your missing teeth, and a complete denture replaces all of them. Some patient lose teeth due to periodontal disease. Others lose teeth due to tooth decay.
All you wanted to know about dentures
Materials used to make partials include acrylic, Valplast or a combination of metal and acrylic. The material used to make a full denture is acrylic and replaces all of your missing teeth. A gasket denture is a complete prosthesis that fits over one to three teeth. If you lose a tooth and have a partial denture, we add teeth to the partial.
Partial dentures and missing teeth
Partials are an economical option to replace missing teeth. Patients with severe tooth decay or periodontal disease experience tooth loss. If you have tooth trauma, you can also experience tooth loss. Partials take two to three weeks to make, a relatively short period.
The ability to replace several teeth quickly and in an affordable manner make partials a great option. Metal framework partials have a metal base. The metal base makes it more rigid and robust. They don’t flex which some patients prefer.
Valplast partial denture
A more esthetic option is a Valplast partial. A Valplast partial blends in a little better with the surrounding tissues. However, it does flex when you bit down. One of the main advantages of partials is that it has adjustable clasps. Adjusting clasps makes the partial more tight or looser. Some patients with a partial might want it tighter or more loose over time.
Full or complete dentures
Full dentures replace all of someone’s missing teeth. If someone doesn’t already have their teeth extracted, some teeth may have to be extracted by our office or at an oral surgeon. During the process of prosthesis fabrication, we generally recommend taking some teeth out first. We do this to let the tissues heal before delivering a prosthesis.
Alternatively, we can make immediate full dentures. With an immediate complete prosthesis, we take out all of someone’s teeth the same day we deliver their denture. With this method, the patient doesn’t go without any teeth.
All-on 4 dental prosthesis
Patients missing all of their teeth also have the option of all-on-four implants. These prostheses fit over and clasp onto two to four implants. Implants support the prosthesis, making it more stable. Implants work well for patients that don’t have much bone to help an appliance. An all-on four prosthesis is a more cosmetic option.
