Teeth need root canals for a few reasons. Some people choose to keep a tooth with endodontic treatment. Also, some patients want to take a tooth out. We can review options with you to help you determine the best option.
What is endodontics?
Endodontic treatment involves removing the nerve of the tooth. A dentist cleans the interior of the root and fills it with a material called gutta percha.

Fractured tooth or teeth
A tooth with a fracture causing tooth pain might require a root canal (i.e., endodontics). In particular, dentists restore teeth with root canals.
Tooth or dental trauma
Teeth that have experienced tooth trauma or injury can require a root canal. Without root canals, some teeth with trauma will become infected. Sometimes, dentists must perform orthodontics to straighten teeth with dental trauma.
Tooth decay
Teeth with large cavities can abscess. Or, a tooth can have such a large hole that it damages the tooth so much that our Mebane dentists cannot save it without a root canal. In these cases, our Mebane dentists remove all the decay first. Then, dentists perform root canals when on savable teeth.
How do we perform root canals?
At Steinbicker Family Dentistry we start a root canal by opening up the pulp chamber of the tooth. Also, we access the pulp which includes the blood vessels and nerves of the tooth, from the top surface of the tooth. Then, we clean out each canal that holds a nerve or blood vessel.
These canals are cleaned and debrided with individual files. Afterward, the canals are filled in with a rubber called gutta percha. Lastly, we will in the top of the tooth with a white colored filling. Teeth with root canals in the back of the mouth need a dental crown.
